Stop Dogs Barking Fast

If your dog is barking non-stop when you’re home and you have checked out what he’s barking at, there are two easy ways to stop dogs barking.  Try these ways to stop dogs barking.

1.  Shake can.

Use a shake can to teach your dog to stop barking when you tell him to stop.  You can use either a metal can or a soft drink bottle.  Put some pennies inside so they rattle and then put the lid on.  If you’re using a metal can you can duct tape the lid back into place.  If you’re using a soft drink bottle simply screw the lid back on.

The next time your dog goes into his nuisance barking use the shake can to startle him into being quiet.  When he barks you should shake the can loudly at him.  This should get his attention.

As soon as he’s quiet you should praise him for stopping the barking and give him a reward.  If you do this repeatedly then your dog will stop the barking.

2.  Sprayers.

You can use a spray bottle or child’s squirt gun to discourage your dog from barking.  Fill up several spray bottles or squirt guns and place them around your house in places where your dog commonly barks.  This may be near windows and doors.  When your dog starts his nuisance barking you should pick up the spray bottle and squirt him.  (There’s no reason to soak him.  Just startle him and get his attention.)  As soon as your dog stops the barking you should praise him for being quiet and give him a reward.  If you do this repeatedly then your dog should stop the barking.

Neither of these methods harms your dog.  The goal is to startle your dog out of his focus on barking so he will be quiet.  Then you can reward him for being a good dog.

If your dog is barking non-stop outside you can keep squirt guns in place outside.  Or, you may need to keep a small watering can in place.  If your dog is barking at some distance from you, try using your hose.  Again, you are not trying to soak your dog or be mean to him. You are simply trying to startle him so he stops the barking.  That way you can reward the good behavior — the silence.  Do remember to always follow up squirting your dog with a reward and lots of praise.

These methods will work if you’re home at the time that your dog is barking.  If your dog is barking when you’re not home, you should talk to your neighbors to find out when and why your dog is barking.  You can’t fix the problem unless you know what’s causing it.  For instance, it’s possible that your dog is barking when your neighbor’s cat sits on the other side of the fence.  There’s not much you can do about that problem.

If your dog is barking at your neighbor when he or she is out in the yard, try introducing your dog to them and encourage them to make friends with your dog.  Give them treats to give your dog.  This can stop the barking when you’re not home and improve neighbor-dog relations.

If all else fails, you may need to have a dog sitter visit the house during the day or try to come home on your lunch hour to check on your dog.  Or, if possible, take your dog to doggy daycare to cut out the barking.
