What is Clicker Dog Training?

Clicker dog training is by far one of the most impressive and effective steps to use to dictate as well as control your dog’s behavior when teaching it basic commands regardless of what breed it is. Since it will only take you only a short time to figure out the master clicker training, you can teach your pet virtually anything provided that you are using a clicker that is well operated.

How Clicker Training Works

In clicker training, you are teaching your dog to follow or obey a command you have given when they hear the sound of the clicker which is usually characterized as a sharp, strong sound that can be heard by them from about 20+ yards away. The objective of the training is to reward a behavior that you like with the sound of the clicker.

However, the clicker is not the beginning of the clicker dog training. The clicker being the reward for a good behavior is the first thing that you should teach your dog. This is quite easy to do especially when you have a two dollar clicker with you which you can buy from any local pet shop as well as a bag of treats.

Using a clicker at this point is important because of several reasons. First, the dog will only hear the sound of the clicker when a reward will be coming their way because they did a good job. In some situations, a verbal or word command can be given but its impact in their head will not be that too strong.

How Clicker Dog Training is Done

There are three basic steps to follow when you are starting to teach your dog on how to respond to a clicker. One, you can easily get your dog to do something you want. It can be whatever trick you are trying to teach him such as speaking, sitting or rolling over. Mark their good behavior when they manage to follow your command using the clicker and follow it up with a treat.

A dog will learn the correct behavior they did in just two or three markings and will be repeating it instantly when they hear the sound of the clicker. What makes clicker dog training work effectively is that you get to reward your dog immediately once they did something you want and at the same time, you are instilling it in their minds. The verbal command will only take some time before it gets through their mind.

Continue repeating the process of rewarding your dog after successfully following a command to reinforce the behavior. There is no need to use treats all the time. You can replace the behavior with praising and petting in the long run.

Transitioning to a Command

The clicker dog training will encourage you to transition to verbal commands that can be used anywhere once the dog understands the behavior even without a clicker on hand. It would be best to say a command first before using a clicker followed by a treat. This way, the dog will easily associate it with one another.

Soon enough with the proper clicker dog training, a dog will quickly respond to a verbal command as well as praise for an action they did and will quickly learn from it. The dog will understand immediately that the action they did pleases you and will continue doing so without the need for praises or treats.

Clicker dog training can be used in a number of occasions. This method can help you train your dog easily in several ways. You can mark as well as reinforce any behavior you have in mind with just a simple but sharp command.
