Just about all of us would like to have a dog who follows our commands and behaves well. We’d like to have a dog who comes when called and never destroys anything. And it would be nice to have a dog who never barks too much or digs or has an accident in the house. Well, those things are possible if you know the secrets to dog training.
What Are The Secrets To Dog Training?
The secrets to dog training are the essential things you need to know to train your dog. Most of them are fairly basic ideas but if you don’t know them you may never be able to successfully train your dog.
Here are some of the secrets:
1. Socialize your dog. Without good socialization your dog will never be confident and well-adjusted. Socialization, especially at a young age, helps your dog develop good manners with other dogs. It teaches him to accept people. It shows him that he doesn’t have to be afraid when unexpected things happen. Good socialization can prevent separation anxiety, nuisance barking and other common behavior problems.
2. You can start training your puppy as early as 8 to 10 weeks old. In fact, the soon you start training, the better. Puppies soak up information like a sponge. That means that it’s very easy for them to learn some basic lessons in good manners and obedience. Use this time to teach your puppy some important lessons that he’ll remember all his life.
3. Make your training sessions fun. Dogs learn best when they think training is a game. If you keep training fun your dog will want to learn and spend time with you. If you are heavy-handed and use a lot of punishment, your dog won’t enjoy training and you’re wasting your time.
4. It’s important to be consistent in your training. Train your dog regularly. Train in short sessions a couple of times per day, but do train every day. Otherwise your dog can quickly begin to forget what you’re teaching him. Regular training will ensure that your dog remembers his lessons.
5. Make your lessons clear and simple. Don’t make things complicated. If you are trying to teach your dog something complicated, break it down into simple steps. Work on one thing until your dog has it mastered. Don’t confuse your dog or your training will fail.
6. It’s fine to use your dog’s name when you train but only in a positive way. For example, don’t call your dog to you if you’re going to punish him for something! Your dog won’t ever come to you again. Call your dog to you to praise him and give him a reward.
7. Try to avoid punishments and corrections. Positive reinforcement usually works a lot better. Most dogs respond better to rewards such as treats, praise, toys and play than to correction and punishment. Look for positive things in your training so you can find something to praise.
8. Timing is very important. If you praise or correct your dog at the wrong time you can send your dog the wrong signal and confuse him. Make sure that you are sending your dog the right message. Get your timing right so you don’t accidentally reward the wrong behavior.
9. Don’t reinforce the wrong behavior. This is easy to do. For example, if your dog jumps on you and you yell at him for it, you may think that you’re giving your dog a correction. However, to your dog, he thinks he’s getting some attention, which is something positive. You have accidentally reinforced your dog’s bad behavior. Look at things from your dog’s point of view.
10. Don’t train when you’re angry or upset. This should be obvious. If you’re in a bad mood then your dog can tell. You probably aren’t in a good frame of mind for training and your dog won’t learn anything. And, never take out your bad mood on your dog.
If you keep these secrets to dog training in mind they can help you train your dog to be the kind of companion you’d like to have.
